Baku, Finance Time. British Council Azerbaijan in partnership with the British Embassy Baku, British Airways and 28 Cinema is delighted to announce the first British Film Festival in Azerbaijan
The opening of the Festival was on 6 December at 28 Cinema with a reception for invited guests and a private screening of The Selfish Giant, a new and prize-winning Clio Barnard film inspired by an Oscar Wilde story. The Festival programme includes Saving Santa, Diana, Now is Good, The World’s End, Suspension of Disbelief, The Double, and About Time. The Festival will last from 6 December to 11 December 2013.
The Film Festival is organized as part of a series of events to commemorate the 20 years anniversary of the British Council in Azerbaijan. As the UK’s leading international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, the British Council has been operating in Azerbaijan since 1993 and has provided thousands of students, learners, teachers, professionals and artists with opportunities, and has worked to develop cultural and educational relations between the United Kingdom and Azerbaijan.
During the opening reception, Elizabeth White, Director British Council Azerbaijan, said ‘It’s great to be able to celebrate the British Council’s 20th anniversary in Azerbaijan together with you all and with your partners for this festival – and with a variety of new and interesting films from Britain’.
Mike Rock, British Airways sales manager for Central Asia and the Levant also attended the opening ceremony on behalf of British Airways, who co-sponsored the event. He said: “We are delighted to be able to support the first British Film Festival in Azerbaijan, which hopefully will be the first of many. One of the beauties of travel is that you get to visit new places, experience new cultures and expand your knowledge. Movies also transport us to somewhere different, and give a taste of new places, so we are happy that we can help to bring British culture a little closer to Azerbaijan through our sponsorship.”
During the opening, a video about the British Council’s 20th anniversary was shown - and 2 lucky guests won business class tickets to London, courtesy of British Airways, in a prize raffle lottery draw.
All movies will be screened in English and in 2D and 3D format. Tickets are available at ticket offices of 28 Cinema and on www.28cinema.az.
